I've been here before. The ambience is ok but the food is just about 4/5. It's a great place though.

Don’t go there! We went because it was listed in The Age Good Cafe Guide.
The service was worse than appalling. The large number of staff members seemed more interested in talking to each other and swanning around behind the counter instead of serving customers.
When we finally did get served, the food was served separately instead of together and just dumped on the table without a smile. Staff seemed very unfriendly towards customers. No smiles for customers, only each other. Bad attitudes (bordering on rude) all round.
PS. The food was ok. However, although we are coffee snobs, we we’re so peed off that we didn’t stay for coffee.

Just returned from a trip to Melbourne and 2 visits to Journal for breakfast. Had the porridge the first morning and loved it so much, went back there the next morning for more of the same. Really loved the coffee and the ambience...will definately return on my next visit to Melbourne

I'm really suprised to see this negative comment. It's completely the opposite to everything I've experienced when visiting for lunch (it's the only thing I look forward to when I'm doing the Adelaide-Melbourne drive).

I can only think that perhaps it was, unfortunately, an exception to the usual delicious food and lovely service.

This place is just awful!
bad service, bad food (everything practically comes out of the microwave)
I have been there twice now and both times it was just awful - I had to send back my coffee because it still had lipstick on it, had to wait so long for cutlery, my food was cold by the time they finally gave me a fork and knive.
just go next door to le pain quotidien for quality everything!

Alice, please don't make generalisations like 'in the country'. If you spent any time there, you'd find that the people you encounter 'in the country' are as diverse, educated, socially and globally aware as you'd find anywhere. The quality of the chicken isn't dictated by location - maybe you just came across a sub-standard foccacia that day.

On Sundays, people here tend to: play sport, attend church, spend time with family, hike, camp, garden, see movies, go clay target shooting, head to the gym. However, there are quite a few places to eat that are open all day Sunday.

I'd heard some negative things about both the food and the speed at The Kitchen; but they've evidently fixed those problems. Blaine and I went there last Wednesday for breakfast, and it was wonderful. I had pancakes, which came with bananas in a cream sauce, and Blaine had what was called a full kitchen. He got two eggs, toast, bacon, tomato, sausage, mushrooms, and hash browns. It was huge, and he wasn't able to finish all of it. What threw me was that the food came out piping hot after only a few minutes of waiting. I had only managed two sips of my latte (which was delicious, hearty, and served by a little blonde girl with a lovely smile and demeanor) when suddenly the food appeared. There were quite a few other tables, too, so my guess is they've found a chef who knows what he/she is doing. Well done, Kitchen. We'll be back for more.
