A minor place

Cool desgin. Is there a special cafe architect? Service is friendly and efficient. The staff seem happy to be here.

A1 Food Store

A1 is a unique place. The food is the cheapest you’ll find anyway.

Atomica Caffe

I saw a small amount of ground coffee on the floor. It’s this side of a place that allows you to linger a while, it’s not a sterile environment, it’s got a buzz.

Bagdad Foods Cafe

All food is made on the premises or at home, and is fresh, tasty and attractively presented. Excellent Monte coffee is served, and teas comes in elegant china cups.

Bomb Café

This place is really quite discreet. I receive a loverly smooth and well made latte.

Breadworks (USA)

This is a cosy little nook in suburban Lousiville.

Café Chickpea

The food is neatly presented and tasty. Long black hot and fairly strong: it hasn’t got the flavour and strength it could have, but it does fairly well.

Café Pharmacino

There’s no rush here, you feel can sit for a while and read the provided newspapers.

Cafe 3A

At most this cosy place would accommodate about thirteen inside. Meals are exquisite. The long black, when first placed on the table, had a crema of about 25mm.

Cicalata

…a great location, near Readings, the Nova, and the rest that Carlton has to offer … this cafe is a good find.

Coffee to the People (USA)

People sit at laptops – one guy writes in a notebook. My s.b. was strong in flavour, good crema, good temperature.

Corner Bakery Cafe (USA)

I had a double shot espresso in a poly cup. Excellent qual (for US). Also Danish – raspberry; fresh, light and fluffy.

Daley at Chimmy's

Large open space. White-painted walls with a large archway.

Don't Tell Tom

This strangely named place is also a music venue. The coffee has a pleasant smooth flavour, perfect for a latte.

El Mirage

Coffee is excellent, my only criticism would be that sometimes it’s not hot enough. A place that you’ll remember and might like to be hanging out at again, in the not-to-distant future.

Empire Expresso Bar

Empire faces onto busy Sydney Rd with old-style glass frontage.

Feedback Cafe

My long black is filled to the correct depth, good crema but a tad cool. Service is friendly.

Feedings at Readings

Nice strong genovese. The caf and the bookshop blend well.

Fenix

It’s good to come to a place and be surprised by a top quality coffee.

Foo-Go's

Definitely a cool vibe. Large brown stylish booths and a house type beat playing. Ordered a large iced-coffee. Good sharp coffee taste and some whole coffee beans on top. Solid scoop of ice-cream.

Gingerlee Green Refectory

Cakes so fresh they slump. Refectory has been accepted by the locals as a fine place to come.

Journal

Journal the slickest cafe I’ve been too. Service is smooth. The crowd is a mix of those coming in from the library to read a book or peruse study notes, to professionals who work in the area.

jus Scrumptious

… on hot summer days cavernous space takes on a welcoming, ever alluring prospect …

kerekere

I like the sense of fun in the idea, and that people were enjoying themselves as well as helping an important cause of their choosing.

Las Chicas

Wide menu. All types of bread offered, pancakes, bagles, all the drinks, smoothies, fresh juices, teas. The crema is about 10mm thick, one of the best yet. A slip shows the coffee quite good, but not a full bodied rich taste, as the crema had me thinking.

Laurent Patisserie

Good coffee (Monte). My long black is a centimetre too full but I don’t mind. No-one seems in a hurry here. No-one appears anxious or tense.

Mart130

Meals are cheap. A location like this – built into an old train station, and now a caf’d up tram stop – is an eye catcher and I immediately needed to hang out here.

Minimo

It occupies a corner on Sydney road, Brunswick. Quiet, peaceful vibe. Food is excellent and is prepared with an ideology of quality.

Ray Cafe

So far I’ve never had a coffee in the whole of Melbourne, better than at Ray. Ray is my coffee benchmark. There’s no better place to sit and collect the morning sun. (This article has been updated once)

Stringers Stores

A quiet, relaxed yet attentive vibe comes through to me.

Sweethearts Cafe

Good Genovese coffee.

The Hot Poppy Cafe Bar

Ordered a macchiato, which was well made and rich in flavour, although it could’ve been a tad hotter. The bread with the dips had been warmed and were loverly and fresh.

The Maling Room

Lovely old building, great natural light… but the praise might end here.

Timbale

A quiet cafe with a chilled-out atmosphere.

Tre Espresso Bar

The atmosphere here is noticeably calm and relaxed.

Trieste Caffe (USA)

Has an old 1950’s feel – the SF equivalent to Pellegrinis.

Turtle Cafe

Turtle occupies a loverly rounded corner in Elwood. A long black comes with a solid crema, good heat and strength.
